There are two reasons behind carry gun in Space. 

One is related to Russian Space Agency and other is related to are Primary question.

Let's start with Russian Space Agency. 

It is one the popular space agency. It's scientists carry guns in Space. They carry guns in space but not to use in Space.

Russia is surrounded by Siberian Forest, which is very dense forest. Forest means Wild animals. And these forest can be a place for astronomers(who go to space for research and for space station management) to land while returning from Space.

The second one is basic reason but related to our Primary question. 

To find the results of firing the gun in space.

 In simple word we can say it as interest in knowing new or in discovering better like You and Me.

Imagine you are floating freely in space, the gun will work just as it does on Earth due to modern ammunition or  firing systems contains an oxidising agent to trigger the explosion, so a gun will still fire, despite the lack of oxygen.
